Making Money with Entrecard

No Gravatar

A new day is dawning in the Entrecard community, and with it comes the legitimization of earning money via one’s Entrecard account. (I sniff an e-book in the works. See below.) No longer is one relegated to back alleys and paypal widgets when magically converting Entrecard Credits (ECs) into cash. The EntreAdmins have rolled out Phase 1 of the Credit Exchange and there are a lot of happy Entrecarders today, including this one.

Enterprising bloggers can now earn $100-$1000 a month (or more) from their Entrecard activity WHILE they build they traffic and publicize their blog. Want to know how? Check out the soon to be compiled and published Entrecard Ebook.

Note: I am not an Entrecard expert. Ok, well maybe I do know my way around Entrecard and have been involved longer than 75% of the other folks here, but that still doesn’t make me an expert. Then again, I guess I have some expertise when it comes to card dropping strategies and how to make money on Entrecard. I’m just not an expert blogger. Now PhiRate, he’s an expert on Entrecard, but he should be as the main programmer dude and one of the admins. (Why are you reading this? The whole “I am not an expert” is a reference to a prior post and is a running gag that isn’t funny anymore.)

2nd Note: Blogging purists who deem themselves above the commercing of their sites can send their spare ECs to me. Thank you in advance.

Entrecard FAQs

No Gravatar

A new Entrecard account popped up recently that is entitled Entrecard FAQs. The author must fancy himself to be a clever fellow as the FAQ doesn’t stand for Frequently Asked Questions, but Forum Admin Quotes.

The site isn’t fancy and is limited by the Blogger driven labels versus the more user-friendly tags & categories. Still, there are a number of quotes from Entrecard Admin PhiRate that address key rules and concepts central to the Entrecard community. Not to be confused with a real FAQ section, Entrecard FAQs is mostly relevant to the Intermediate Entrecarder, not the brand noobie.

The site has not been endorsed or shunned by Entrecard as of this writing and does contain a small disclaimer in the header that it is not an official Entrecard publication. The quotes appear to be completely lifted from the Entrecard Forums and contain a link to the specific thread being quoted. Not all of the Admin quotes are included and it’s entirely possible that key quotes are missing or policy changes have rendered some of the quoted passages moot. Regardless, this is a useful resource for Entrecarders and worth a few minutes perusal.

Entrecard Widget Surfing Should Get Double Credits

The Entrepoll this week is about what type of dropper you are, and by my own admission I am a Power dropper, with a hint of Reciprocative thrown in. One of the downsides to running multiple Entrecard accounts is that it’s difficult to stay on top of all the card drops that run through 20 Inboxes. My current approach is to aggregate the various cards that have been dropped on my accounts and create folders that I use for all of the accounts. I’m not dropping from all 20 accounts every day and so I’m probably not going to win any Reciprocative Dropper awards. Honestly, the main reason I bother with working out of the Inbox isn’t that I’m a friendly guy…it just improves the odds of return drops and the closer I can get to a 100% RDR, the more efficient I become.

I should probably include in each of my posts some disclaimer to the effect that “I am not an expert.” There are few things that I do consider myself to be an expert on and yet it’s easy to slip into that authoritative tone when writing, even when we know that we’re not an expert. Sometimes just knowing more than your reader is qualification enough to justify the “expertise.” However, even though I’ll bet I’m as guilty as the next guy, it irks me when someone is passing themselves off as an expert when their advice is just garbage. A difference of opinion I can accept, but when you don’t really have a clue, like when you have been part of the Entrecard community for 7 days and you are writing one of your obligatory “Entrecard is great and this is how to do it right” posts, please tone it down. 1500 ECs in your account doesn’t make you the man, and you ain’t no expert.

OK…now that that is off my chest, let me get back to card dropping strategies and the title of this post. It’s true that Power dropping 300 cards from a list or from folders is very efficient. And it’s also true that Reciprocative dropping will make you lots of friends here in the Entrecard community. But (inside joke for the Executive Apprentice) I’m thinking that Widget Surfing should be the Entrecard-sponsored card dropping strategy of choice. The reason is that it helps support the ad system better than the other card dropping strategies.

Power dropping means you’re not caring whose ad is on that site’s widget, just how quickly can you click and run. Reciprocative dropping is about who dropped on you and not who advertised on their widget. Neither of those two popular strategies are designed to benefit the 3rd party advertiser. Sure, you get an EC and the site gets an EC and the widget advertiser gets…a visit to their site? Not usually. They DO get their Entrecard seen (yeah!) and there is some benefit to that, but don’t we really want visitors to our sites when we advertise and not just brand recognition?

Nimble fingers will still be able to widget surf their way to 300 sites in 30 minutes or less, managing to avoid reading “distracting” content along the way. However, if most folks were to widget surf instead of power drop or reciprocative drop then the ad system would have greater applicability. Spent 500 ECs on a Popular site? With widget surfing you should (on average) get 250 visitors to your site from that ad. It doesn’t happen that way because Power dropping and Reciprocative dropping can drive the cost of the ad up without any direct relationship to the number of visitors your ad will generate.

So let’s reward widget surfers with an extra bump. Give them a credit for hitting the “Drop Yours” and another one for clicking on the ad on the widget. (Since I am not a programmer, I am comfortable in the ignorance that believes that PhiRate can make it happen.) Of course, there will never be a “perfect” system that pleases everyone, but for now (and I recognize that I will likely have another idea tomorrow) I vote for subsidizing Widget Surfing.

Aloha.

NOTE: I am not an Entrecard expert.

Entrecard Noobies, By the Numbers

No Gravatar

It’s not like I don’t always have something else I should be doing for my Entrecard accounts. Over the course of a week I might make 30 or more posts and rarely are they regurgitations of someone else’s post. Yet, every once in a while I like to cruise through the Recent category to see the noobies and what they are bringing to the Entrecard community. As I don’t seem to do this often enough to see all the new accounts while they are still on the Recent page, I have found it useful and informative to spend some time checking out the last 100-200 accounts that have signed up. To do this I usually just enter in their profile ID in numeric order. For example, this blog’s id is “http://entrecard.com/t/oc/3582.” (You can find the id by rolling your mouse over the Advertise area of a card in the Categories or by copying the link location from their profile page, among other places.

I’ll usually paste the link location into the address bar and then go take a look at the noobie’s site. Then I’ll paste it again and change the last digit(s) to see the next id in sequence. I drop cards along the way and bookmark the sites that I find to be most interesting, which recently resulted in a post on my 11 blogs site. Sure, it’s a chore to go through 200 new sites at a sitting, but I don’t want to lose track of the fact that the Entrecard community is growing and that each week there are hundreds of new members who haven’t yet had the thrill of bumping into the Biz Beacon! Seriously, as I have many Entrecard related sites that could be of interest to newer Entrecard members, I want to try to stay on top of who’s new.

I haven’t been keeping stats, but I was surprised to find that a good number (1/3?) of newer accounts have abandoned their widget within just a few days of joining Entrecard. Sometimes the reason is obvious by the nature of the site and other times I think that they were either confused or overwhelmed by the process or were just checking out Entrecard based on the ambient buzz. It’s what prompted me to list the 11 blogs that I did and I hope to continue to highlight newer members, especially those who have established blogs and might be debating whether or not this community is for them.

Ad Prices are Going Up!

No Gravatar

When I first cooked up the idea for the Biz Beacon Advertising Co-op I knew that it would be a more difficult sale if my 20 blogs had an average ad cost of 100 ECs. I had purposely risked the ire of fellow Entrecarders by rejecting ad requests left and right and proceeded to not drop many cards for 5 days. At that time one could have advertised on my 20 sites via the system for about 600 ECs total. I had one paying customer and one who stiffed me. (Now I require payment up front.) Today, the system charges 2013 ECs to advertise on my sites and most of them have a line of approved ads to run. While I’m not going to try and sell my 20 widgets space for concurrent placement, I figure that I will throw it out there to the occasional reader (versus dropper, who didn’t make it this far down the page) who might be interested in advertising on my sites:

Make me an offer!

The system gives us 25% of the ad cost, so if all my blogs’ widgets are purchased I get just over 500 ECs a day right now. That’s about $100 a month at wholesale prices and $150 a month at retail prices for ECs. That’s good…but it could be better. The more cards I drop, the higher my ad prices, the more ECs I get, the more money I make. PLUS…I’m not advertising on hardly any sites right now and those ECs from ads on my sites and from card dropping are starting to build up. In theory, with 20 Entrecard accounts that each dropped the 300 daily max and got a 66% return drop rate, that’s 10000 ECs a day…in addition to my ad revenue. Well, I’m not dropping 300 cards a day, mostly because I don’t have the time, but also because my ad prices would go through the roof. It keeps me busy dropping 100 cards a day (on average) per account and that helps keep my ad prices more reasonable. And if any of you are thinking of advertising on my sites, just remember that ALL the traffic I get is Entrecard driven.

Here’s an offer in case you couldn’t think of one:

As my sites’ ad prices go up I will consider accepting and then rejecting your ad after a 23 hour run. You have to go through the normal process of advertising on my site(s) and then send me 2/3 of the ad price you paid via the Entrecard “Give credits to this site” system, followed up by a message letting me know what you did. (For example, if the system price is 100 ECs, you’ll send me 66 ECs separately.) I’ll run your ad and when it is about to expire I’ll reject it and you will get the system price back. You end up with a 33.3% discount (actually it is less than 1/3 because its run was only 23 hours instead of 24, but you get the idea) and I end up with more ECs. And Graham has already okayed this approach!

I should note that I’m not going to be getting up at 2AM to reject your ad so we’ll have to make sure that your ad run starts and ends at a time that I can reject it at the right time. IF I fail to do so and you don’t get a system refund, I will refund the entire system price that you paid.

Don’t like my offer? Fine…make me an offer that suits you and maybe I’ll accept it.

Saphrym is holding a contest with a $250 Grand Prize and I’ve Entered it! Contest Guidelines state:

1. Pick a post (besides this one) from Saphrym.com and blog about it. The post can be positive, neutral, or even negative if you just don’t like me.
2. Include this link:
Saphrym
(Copy and paste that code into your html code for your post exactly as is. The link should look like this: Saphrym)
3. Include a link to the actual post you are blogging about.
4. Include a link to this contest post.
5. Comment below and leave a link to your post making sure to provide a valid e-mail address.

The post on Saphrym’s site that I have chosen to blog about is My Turn For Thoughts. At first I found it odd that Saphrym would expose himself in such a personal post about God, Organized Religion, Evolution, Abortion, Flag Burning, Capitol Punishment, and Gun Control. That was likely a result of reading the post via email, right after 10+ posts on how to make money online. Saphrym has already shown his willingness to get personal with his posts about weight loss and other areas of life that many of us would choose to shield from the prying eyes of others. The fact that he stood atop the Entrecard Popular page for weeks shouldn’t override his option to write about what he feels strongly about. Saphyrm isn’t a spokesperson for Entrecard and I fully support his approach to stating it the way he feels it, even if I don’t agree 100% with what he has to say. Kudos to you Saphrym for being honest to yourself.

Entrecarders Create Useful Tools for Others in the Community

No Gravatar

I don’t have the experience to evaluate whether or not what has occurred in the Entrecard community is typical of other communities or not. What I can say is that I find it interesting that individual Entrecarders have been willing to share with others info and tips that improve the functionality of Entrecard.

Turnip of Power was the first one that I noticed with his list of card drop bookmarks. He regularly updates his list and those who are striving to be Drop Masters will save hours of time by taking advantage of Turnip’s goodwill gesture. Others have followed suit with lists of links posted on their sites, some that should come with a warning label in that dropping cards too quickly will result in penalties being assessed.

Ben Barden highlighted a method of reciprocal card dropping that targets another approach to utilizing Entrecard. An assist can be given to Cecilia of You Should Own for discovering the tiny link that opens the expanded Inbox. (I’m still waiting for the official explanation as to why Entrecard didn’t let us know about it.)

Entrecash.com and Entrecredits.com opened up the door for commercing in Entrecard credits, and again it was Turnip who introduced the paypal widget that is now seen on 5 different sites where one can purchase ECs. (In case you don’t know, I started a site called the EntreBank where I was going to lend ECs and have since converted it to Black Market ECs where one can find a comprehensive list of EC vendors and their prices.)

Daily Tech Impressions has created a toolbar for Entrecard, Linkfog has a fun Entreball page where one can buy numbers and possible win the EC pot, there are several sites where one can have their contest listed, and I’ve got an Entrepoll site (that is feeling very neglected at the moment) where one can take part in Entrecard related surveys.

My bottom line is that if you are an Entrecarder and haven’t perused the Blogging Resources Category or wandered through the Promotions Forum you are likely missing out on opportunities to improve your Entrecard experience.
